What are the Afidos?

Aphids are one of the most common insect pests in garden plants, from vegetables to roses. Each species of aphid generally attacks the same family of plants, but multiple species of aphids can coexist in the same garden. Aphids can reproduce without mating, so their numbers can increase dramatically in just a few days. And they also feed in dense clusters, making them one of the most destructive plant-devouring insects.

IDENTIFICATION

Aphids have a smooth, teardrop-shaped body and can have various colors depending on the species, such as green, orange-yellow, black, or reddish pink. They often have a waxy or waxy appearance, and generally the adults do not have wings. Unlike other similar insects, aphids move slowly when disturbed.

SIGNS / DAMAGES

Aphids damage plants by piercing them with their mouth and sucking the plant juices. They often attack young and tender parts such as soft stems and leaves or new buds. The plants become wrinkled, curled and folded and their growth is stunted. Another sign of problems with aphids is the presence of black mold like soot that forms in the honeydew excreted by the aphids when feeding. Aphids can transmit viruses from one plant to another.
